Eczema
What is it? Eczema or Atopic Dermatitis is a condition that causes the skin to become red and itchy. This condition is most commonly occurs in children but can been seen in adults as well. Eczema is chronic therefore most patients experience periodic flare-ups and may be accompanied by hay fever or asthma.
Symptoms- While symptoms vary between patients the most common are as follows:
- Dry skin
- Itching
- Red/Brown patches typically on the hands, feet, ankles,wrists,neck,upper chest, knees, and eyelids
- Small raised bumps
- Thickened skin
- Raw and sensitive skin due to scratching
What are the most common eczema flare-up triggers?
- Dry Skin
- Irritants
- Metals
- Fragrance
- Dyes
- Cigarette smoke
- Soaps and household cleaners
- Certain fabrics such as wool and polyester
- Stress
Is there any treatment? No cure has been found for atopic dermatitis but there are treatments that can help alleviate the symptoms and make this condition more tolerable. Topical medications such as Tacrolimus and crisaborole can be prescribed to help. Injectable medication such as Dupixent can also be prescribed. Dupixent works by lowering inflammation that can lead to eczema flare-ups. Using at home remedies can also alleviate symptoms. For patients that are struggling with atopic dermatitis on the full body, light therapy treatments are a great option. Light therapy uses UV light to help reduce inflammation. Those with eczema should learn to recognize what can trigger a flare-up. Using mild soaps with no fragrence and keeping the skin moistuized will help to not irritate the affected areas.
